The ribbon‑cutting ceremony for the Legacy Trail Extension Bifurcated Trail was held on March 31, 2026. Commissioners Ron Cutsinger, Mark Smith, Teresa Mast, and Dr. Joe Neunder attended the event, along with representatives from design contractor Kimley-Horn, construction contractor Spectrum Underground, the County Administrator Jonathan Lewis, ACA Nicole Rissler, Interim Director Shawn Yeager, county staff, and community guests.
This new 1.5‑mile segment features a six‑foot‑wide pedestrian sidewalk running parallel to the Legacy Trail Extension, offering designated spaces for pedestrians and cyclists in select areas to enhance safety and user experience. The project was made possible through generous support from the Friends of the Legacy Trail, a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Recreational Trails Program, and North County Park Impact Fees.
The trail is now officially open and ready for everyone to enjoy!

Sarasota County received the official Notice to Proceed (NTP) from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) on October 16, 2025. This marked a key milestone, authorizing the start of construction activities under the terms of the grant agreement. The 120-day contract period officially began on October 20, 2025, as outlined in the FDEP agreement.
Following this, the County issued its formal Construction Notice to Proceed on October 27, 2025, after receiving the required documentation from the contractor. This notice allows full mobilization and the start of on-site work.
The first visible activity began shortly after: survey staking started on October 29, 2025, which is a critical step in marking out the exact locations for construction based on the approved site plans.
We appreciate the community’s continued support and patience as we move forward with this exciting project. These early steps lay the foundation for the improvements to come, and we look forward to sharing more updates as construction progresses.

This project involves the design and phased construction of a new pedestrian sidewalk running parallel to the Legacy Trail Extension. The goal is to enhance safety and accessibility by providing a dedicated asphalt pathway for pedestrians, separate from the main trail used by cyclists.
